Social Assistance Recipient Support For Employment & Training

The SARSET program was made possible through a partnership agreement made in March, 2000, between the Native Council of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services.

SARSET is designed to assist the rural, urban, off-reserve Indigenous Peoples of Nova Scotia who are in receipt of provincial income assistance through DCS, Currently on a fixed income or no income. To ensure SARSET is accessible to eligible Indigenous persons, the province is divided into five (5) regions. Each point of service is located in Sydney, Truro, Dartmouth, Coldbrook and Liverpool, Nova Scotia

Upon request, SARSET will arrange to meet with you at a time and location convenient to you.

SARSET Offers

SARSET’S main role is to assist Indigenous participants in realizing and achieving their goals for employment, training or upgrading by:

  • Identifying with you, your needs and barriers while respecting and keeping confidentiality.
  • Offering Long Term supports as needed to overcome barriers
  • Helping to develop and commit with you, a realistic plan to achieve success, by outlining your skills, assets and barriers that may have influenced upon employment and training opportunities
  • Informing you about training opportunities offered at community colleges, private career colleges, customized industry training opportunities, universities as well as, upgrading or pre-employment preparedness courses.
  • Advocate on your behalf to access additional resources to achieve your goals.
  • Ongoing supports and encouragement throughout the process
  • Assist in developing and updating resumes
  • Assist in interview preparation through coaching, mock interviews, providing interview tips and increase confidence with interview process
  • Making job referrals or advising you of current job opportunities
  • Gathering Labour Market information in order to assist in making a career choice, upskill current credentials or consider a career change.
