The Aboriginal Trades Project

The Aboriginal Trades Project’s goal is to continue to increase the number of Aboriginal People who are trained and retained in the designated skilled trades and to also register rural, urban off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship agency through our Joint Registration Agreement, ultimately moving them through the apprenticeship process.

Activities

  • Provide information sessions to promote trades as a viable career option and the NS Apprenticeship system;
  • Employer/Industry engagement to assist with attaching Aboriginal Peoples to employment in the skilled trades;
  • Attract Aboriginal participants to designated trades related training and link them to financial training supports;
  • Provide support to our Aboriginal apprentices through their apprenticeship journey;
  • Register/transfer Aboriginal participants with Apprenticeship Agency through our Joint Registration Agreement;
  • Offer Career exploration/ trade tours to Aboriginals to increase their understanding of the skilled trades.
  • Refer Aboriginal Youth to the Annual Skills Trade Fair established by Mi’kaw Kina’matnewey (MK)
  • Identify Aboriginal mentors/champions to mentor Aboriginal youth in the skilled trades;
  • Recognize the Aboriginal apprentices/journeyperson progressing throughout their apprenticeship:

Joint Registration Agreement

  • Is a collective agreement between the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency and APTEC;
  • It provides apprentices the opportunity to work within the designated trades with multiple employers with out transferring the apprenticeship agreement;
  • The JRA enables APTEC to register apprentices’ direct entry within the trades;
  • The JRA keeps up to date records on hours and skills the apprentices have gained to keep them moving forward with in their trade;
  • Assist with Registering them for technical training;
